The Johnson Mountain Resort Area

The Johnson Mountains of central West Virginia have more than 300 miles of mountains, forests, and valleys that feature pristine lakes and rivers. You haven't really seen how beautiful a sunrise or a sunset can be until you've seen one from the Johnson Mountains. The area boasts lodging of all types and at all budget ranges, from luxury to budget. If you are planning one vacation this year, you should put a visit to the Johnson Mountains at the top of your list. We have a large contingent of international travelers to our region. There are activities here for every type of leisure activity. You can hike, hunt and camp in our forests and fish in our lakes. You can go canoeing, boating or rafting in our rivers. If you are any type of outdoor enthusiast, you will love a trip to this region. We do, however, offer outdoor activities that are not for the rugged or adventurous at heart. If you enjoy golf, tennis, or swimming, you'll find the Johnson Mountains have resorts that cater to those activities as well.1

Love the Great Indoors?

If you are not the outdoors type, don't think you're not welcome. The Johnson Mountains have become a favorite destination for honeymooners. Couples come here to get a sense of peace and privacy. If the only activities you crave are a walk in the woods, a swim in the pool, and eating in fine restaurants, you've come to the right place. Many of the resorts here cater just to honeymoon couples. They will create just the right mood and just the right setting that you desire.

Get a Real Sense of History

If you are a history buff, you'll really enjoy a tour of the region. There are several Civil War historic battlefields to tour. We have a Restoration Village in East Summersville, which recreates a town circa 1790. Many of the Victorian mansions in the region date to the late 1700's and early 1800's. Several of the mansions are open to tourists. In addition, many of the mansions have been converted to cozy bed and breakfast establishments. You can also tour several of the Native American establishments in the region. There are small museums and galleries throughout the area.
