During the winter of 2005, a new office was added to the administration center. This new office has enabled us to update our computer systems, as the new office is completely wired for networking software and hardware. The new office has given our administrative staff some welcome elbow room to handle the vast amount of paperwork that goes into each adoption. Thanks to the improved space and new hardware and software, it is now much easier to record and track the adoption process.
2006 Donations Exceed Goal Again for Second Year
The 2006 Fundraising Drive far exceeded our expectations. In all, we raised about $1,000,000 more than anticipated. Part of the money that was raised this year was put towards some final renovations for the new office that was added during the prior year. This was the first year that Furr a Good Cause relied heavily on fund raising over the Internet. Prior to 2006, we relied primarily on funds that were received at the door or through fund-raising mailings. Our Internet fund raising has been a relatively inexpensive way for Furr a Good Cause to raise badly-needed funding. With mailing and printing costs on the rise each year, the Internet seemed a wise choice to expand our fund-raising efforts. In the coming years, the Internet may become the focal point of most of our off-site fund-raising efforts.

Our mobile pet adoption van started rolling this year. The van enabled us to showcase our cats and dogs at malls, shopping centers, parks, and playgrounds. By taking the animals "to the people," we were able to increase adoptions by over 100%. Many people who could not find the time to come to our adoption center praised the idea of the mobile adoption van. Pets could not be adopted on-site, but arrangements could be made to select a pet for adoption and then follow through by coming to the Furr a Good Cause adoption center. The Pets on Wheels van does allow us to showcase our animals, particularly those animals that have been with us for quite some time.
2008 Unexpected Donations Made
We received several large donations that totaled more than $3,000,000. More than half of this money was donated by the Grupp family; another large amount of more than $1,000,000 was donated anonymously. No firm decisions have been made about how to spend the unexpected windfall of donation money. Besides purchasing another mobile adoption unit, discussion has begun about establishing a second adoption center to be located about 20 miles east of the current location. This new site would be closer to the region's growing suburban areas.
2009 Groundbreaking on the New Satellite Center
Groundbreaking has occurred on the new satellite adoption center. The center will be approximately 2,000 square feet, not including space for the animals. The fully air-conditioned and heated unit will enable us to provide the surrounding suburban area with better service over the coming years. Of course, with the creation of the satellite center, there is an ever-increasing demand for volunteers. Looking long-term, a second satellite center might be feasible if volunteer staffing is not an issue.
